Sue Hubbard | Fused Glass - Weaving - Zentangle - Fancy Stitch
Artist Statement
I might be called a multi-media artist, because I have several mediums that I enjoy working with. Working with glass has been a long time interest. I began my artistic endeavors with stained glass more than 20 years ago. I refused to use standard patterns and developed my own designs. I had two books published for the stained glass community of those designs. Then my interest in fused glass replaced the stained glass, a medium that I have had experience doing for quite some time. I developed a process for making the fused glass nightlights that I have for sale, and it is unique to my product. It involves using crushed glass (frit) to draw an image and then add the colored frit to be fired in a kiln. Zentangle is a drawing concept that I have been working with for a few years. The ink drawings are colored in and Zentangle patterns are added. It is a process that is not predetermined and decisions are made as you draw. |
Fibers have always been in the mix, having spent several years making small wall quilts. My interest in weaving happened recently, when I visited a gallery and saw some on display, I was intrigued, so decided to give it a try. Experimentation has led to new techniques that I utilize in my work. With my background in other media I have a good foundation in color and design.
My current weaving projects led me to a new original concept. I gave it the name “Fancy Stitch”, because it consists of varied embroidery stitches. My first thought was to make small embroidered medallions for my weavings. It was fun making them and I kept making them bigger and more interesting. That is how I came to make the pieces of “Fancy Stitch” that you see in my collection. My goal is to execute in the most skillful way and present an artistic item that will inspire someone to want to add it to their lives. Each new art approach that I learn, gives me the opportunity to challenge my creative skills to its best use in each project. |
