Sue Demel | Illustrator
Artist Statement
As a life long illustrator, I’ve always worked with a client’s colors and vision in mind. As a professional singer/songwriter, I’ve been drawn to storytelling with rhythm and melody. Now, with my paintings and digital imagery, I am combining these ideas to create a personal visual language. I hope to combine color & storytelling with wonder & humor. My work invites the viewer to consider, that even in this scary world, not everything monstrous is a monster. When we’re quick to judge, we miss the beauty in those different to us. When we take our time to know someone, we find the merits within, even the sacred… hence the golden halos that live around my characters, a little contemporary iconography. Throughout all of my art forms I invite the viewer to tell their own stories. As a professional freelance illustrator for over 30 years, I have created logos, illustrations for children’s books, album covers, banners, murals and interactive museum pieces, instruction manuals, coloring books, annual reports, festival posters and much more. I have been an assistant painter for a mural company, and helped build theater sets. I’ve been a silk-screen artist in a high end poster shop and lots of other things. I am a working & sometimes touring musician & backup vocalist, most notably in a band called Sons of the Never Wrong. I'm a freelance songwriting/performance teacher and also teach online for the Old Town School of Folk Music. The warm months keeps me busy gigging & teaching at many writing retreats in the mid-west. The cold months keep me painting & illustrating, working odd-jobs in Marquette, and communing with my |
husband and dogs in our cabin on the Chocolay River in Harvey, Michigan. I am so happy to be part of Zero Degrees Gallery.
